A pillow top mattress is designed to offer proper support for the back and help reduce pressure point problems. Most pillow top mattresses will have a more squared appearance and depending on the side finish can also be called a euro top mattress. The original idea behind the pillow top was to allow the manufacture to add more layers of padding without the mattress looking or feeling like it was crowned. As more people found that a more comfortable night sleep was available, the number of pillow top mattresses available greatly increased. As with most types of products, there is a range of quality available in pillow top mattresses. The two features that make the most difference in the quality of the mattress are, the support layer and the comfort layer. The support layer in most of the products is a coil spring unit. This coil spring unit is what determines how much weight the mattress will support and how long that firm support will last. Increasing the number of coils or using stronger springs is how a more supportive and longer lasting mattress is created. The comfort layer is what is between you and the firm support of the mattress. Pillow top mattresses come in different thickness and degrees of softness. Many different materials are used in creating the pillow top. The two most popular types of padding are memory foam and latex foam. These two materials offer great pressure point relief and are known for there durability.
